GEOG XL 174: Advanced Remote Sensing

This course offers instruction in advanced programmatic image processing and analysis operations applicable to remotely sensed (satellite and aerial platforms) geographic data.  Students learn to build multi-step image analysis processes using scripting of the cloud-based Google Earth Engine platform, as well as the industry-standard ArcGIS for Desktop software platform.  Specific techniques covered in the course include classification, filtering, change detection, spatial modeling, image correction, and terrain analysis.  Basic scripting and model building techniques are introduced, and practical exercises ensure that students develop experience with image processing techniques in both ArcGIS and Google Earth Engine.  Students will complete a partially self-directed capstone project integrating image processing and analysis in addition to geographic information systems (GIS) mapping methods. Practical applications provided throughout the course.
